Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Konrad

Konrad is a German name, from the Gremanic elements “kuon” meaning “bold” and “rad” meaning “counsel” loosely translating to “bold ruler” or “able advice”. Konrad I was King of the Germans in the early 10th century and Konrad II was an early 11th century Holy Roman Emperor. There were several men of nobility (kings, dukes, counts and such) named Konrad throughout medieval Germany, Bavaria and Luxemburg. We’re guessing they all demonstrated “bold rulership” over their respective domains. There was also a notable bishop-turned-saint in 10th century Germany, Conrad of Constance, who may have had a hand in further inspiring the usage of his name. He is remembered for drinking his sacramental wine even after a spider (then believed to be poisonous) had dropped into his goblet. Such an act was considered a legendary demonstration of his faith. Because the name was so common and widespread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages, Konrad made his way over to England eventually where it was used from time to time – although the English opt for Conrad over the stronger German Konrad. Today Konrad with a K is most popular in Poland.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KONRAD

Unlike Conrad, Konrad with a K has never been popular enough to eke out a position on America’s Top 1000 list, which means this version of the name is given to less than 100 baby boys per year (out of roughly two million). Usage of “K” names over “C” names (Karl/Carl, Kristoffer/Christopher, etc) are more common in Eastern and Northern Europe, whereas the “C” versions tend to be more Latinized. The K gives Konrad a stronger look and feel than the more genteel Conrad. It really just comes down to spelling preference.
