Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Savannah

Savannah is a female given name used primarily in the United States and derived from a place name. Savannah, Georgia is a well-known southern city established in 1733 and built on the Savannah River. The river’s name is believed to have been derived from variant names given to the Shawnee tribe, a Native American people who migrated to the river in the 1680s (which became southernmost part of the Algonquin nation). Apropos, in the Algonquian language the word “shawano” means “southerner” – the word which purportedly gave the area its name. Other scholars believe Savannah may have been derived from a Shawnee word meaning moderate, warm climate. A savanna, or savannah, is also a grassland ecosystem characterized by small, widely spaced trees unable to form canopies, thus providing very little shade. As a female given name, Savannah is quite modern and she shares space on America’s Top 100 list with other geographical places such as Madison, Brooklyn, Sydney and London. Ironically, as a baby girl’s name, Savannah is more popular in Australia and Sydney is more popular in the United States!

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME SAVANNAH

The name Savannah has actually been used in America for over 100 years despite its modern trendiness. It was a name mainly isolated to the south at the turn of the 20th century so its familiarity and usage was not widespread. By the early 1920s, the name completely disappeared from the U.S. popularity graphs. It wasn’t until 1983 that the name jumped back onto the charts pretty dramatically. This may have had something to do with a 1982 movie called “Savannah Smiles” about a well-to-do little girl who orchestrates her own disappearance in an effort to get her parent’s attention. The movie probably reminded Americans how charming the name Savannah sounds, so parents started using it again. Since 1982, the name has stayed on the charts, further bolstered in the mid-1990s by the popular book and movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” which depicts an assortment of eccentric Savannah personalities. The name’s peak popularity was achieved in 2006 and 2007 when she was ranked #30 in the nation. Today she appears to be parking herself comfortably on America’s Top 50.
