Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Izabella

The name Izabella is formed from Isabella, much like Elizabeth was once formed from Elisabeth. Both come from the Latin form of Isabel, which was originally the Spanish version of the name Elisabeth. The name made its way to France in the Middle Ages and then onto England. The name's root origin "Elisheba" means "God is my oath" and is attributed to the wife of Aaron in the Book of Exodus from the Bible. Through centuries of movement across various European geographies, cultures and languages, Isabella is one last derivation of Elisheba. Isabella is the preferred spelling of the name in America and England at this point in history. Izabella (with a “z”) has only recently come into use in the English-speaking world, but it appears to be the preferred spelling in Poland.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME IZABELLA

We know that Isabella is the #1 ranked name for little girls in America right now. Izabella only first jumped onto the charts in 1999 in reaction to Isabella’s success. At that point in time, she was soaring to the top. American parents are known for taking a super popular name and then playing around with spelling variations to set them apart from the crowd. Replacing the “s” with a “z” was as natural a thing to do as it was once done to the name Elizabeth. Perhaps it will eventually become the preferred spelling (as what happened with Elizabeth); but we doubt it. Izabella is a way to differentiate a hyper-popular name, but is literally the same name with the same sound. It comes down to preference. We can tell you that New Mexico likes this spelling – not as much as Isabella – but they do rank Izabella higher than any other state per capita. Until this name has a longer tenure of usage, your daughter is going to go through life saying “Izabella. That’s Izabella with a Z.” Then we assume she's probably of Polish origin.
