Lindsey

Lindsey first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1974 and became a fast-favorite. Previously, Lindsey was used as a masculine given name in the United States (dating back to the 19th century, in fact). However, as the name became ϋber-trendy for females in the 1980s, Lindsey fell off the male naming charts (seemingly) permanently in 1987. Today, we would call this name female. The height of Lindsey’s popularity for girls was between 1982 and 1988 when she managed to hold a spot on the Top 50 list of most favorite girl names. As fast as she would come into vogue, however, was about as fast as she fell from her peak. The name dropped off the Top 100 list in 2000 and has been experiencing quick decline in this century. Lindsey is now no longer on the Top 400 list making her usage relatively moderate at best. Since this name started out on the charts as a boy’s name, Lindsey has that androgynous quality that many American parents like for their little girls (although many feel that Lindsay with an “a” is the more feminine version of this name, a la Lindsay Lohan). Now no longer over-used names, Lindsey and Lindsay are more original choices for the 21st century. It’s a non-fluffy, non-girly-girl name, simple and straight-forward sounding, but with a touch of femininity to keep it interesting.
