Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Brenna

Brenna is most likely the feminine form of the Irish masculine name Brennan. Brennan is the anglicized version of the Gaelic given name Braonán which means “sorrow”. This meaning is ultimately derived from the Irish word “braon” (“tear drop”) plus the diminutive “-an” suffix suggesting a “little tear drop”. It’s not the most happiest of etymologies but there is something bittersweet about it. Some people have suggested that Brenna comes from one of the Celtic languages and means either "little raven" or "lovely one" but we simply could not find any evidence for these claims. Since Brenna was mainly coined in the United States it could have also developed as a variant of Brenda or Brianna.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME BRENNA

Brenna has been in use in America since the early 1970s. It hit its peak popularity in the mid-1990s when it achieved spot #235 on the charts in 1995. Since that year, however, Brenna has been on a backwards trajectory as her popularity is on the decline. The name continues to slip down the charts and is now at levels of fairly low moderation. No longer a stylish choice by today’s naming standards, Brenna was more consistent with the fashions of the 1980s and 90s. No one seems to be crying a “little tear drop” for her, though. Brenna has come and gone without much fuss or fanfare. Never an ϋber-popular favorite, Brenna is nonetheless soft and sweet. It’s a simple, understated beauty with a touch of melancholy (sorrow). The name is wistful and breezy and rolls off the tongue with ease.
