Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Marisol

Marisol is a Spanish name with three possible etymologies. Some believe it to be the combination of María and “sol” (the Spanish word for “sun”); while others maintain it’s an abbreviated form of Our Lady of Solitude (María de la Soledad) in reference to the loneliness and solitude Mary experienced while her son Jesus lay in his tomb (prior to the resurrection). Lastly, and this is likely folk etymology (but it works), Marisol could be an invented name from “mar y sol” which in Spanish means “sea and sun”. Given the devout Catholic beliefs of most Spanish-speakers, however, we believe that Marisol probably developed as a pet form in honor of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad. The name has primarily been used by Spanish-speakers or those of Spanish descent.

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME MARISOL

Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME MARISOL

This “sunny” or "solitary" name (depending on your interpretation) first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1962 and she very quickly saw substantial rises in popularity. We’re certain this was influenced by a Spanish singer-actress of the 1960s in Spain named Josefa Flores González but who was better known simply as Marisol. She was one of the most popular icons of her day, and Spanish-speaking Americans took to her lovely name with enthusiasm. Marisol advanced about 700 positions up the charts in nine short years. During this period (1962-1970), Marisol may have garnered more interest with the 1967 United States release of an Italian spaghetti western film “A Fistful of Dollars” starring Clint Eastwood. In the movie, Marisol is the damsel in distress rescued by the “The Man with No Name” (played by Eastwood). Marisol has held pretty firm at moderate levels of usage since the 1960s, although she seems to be in decline at the moment. In 2005, the American Girl series launched a Latina-American doll named Marisol but she hasn’t improved the usage of this relatively underused name. Marisol is a graceful and modestly unassuming name while maintaining a lovely lyrical and poetic quality.
