Madalynn

Madalynn is currently the 8th most popular spelling of Madeline which means about 4-5% of the Madeline’s being born today will spell their name this way. Madalynn is a spelling variation that only popped onto the charts in 2001, so it’s a relatively new invention. There are certain names that become popular (like Madeline did in the 1990s), and for some reason American parents are compelled to respell, misspell or whatever you want to call it (look at Madison and Caitlin for example). No other English-speaking nation goes to the extent Americans do when it comes to creative respellings and flat-out reinventions of names. Madalynn is hardly recognizable compared to Madeline – look how many vowels and consonants have been moved around or altered. Madalynn is practically a shadow of her former self at this point. Don’t be surprised if you hear some grumblings out there as a result. Many Americans find these types of invented, creative spellings kitschy and tasteless. But they’re traditionalists and you may find your preferred spelling “cuter” or more phonetically appealing. It’s your decision and we respect that. Just be forewarned: your daughter will go through life constantly having to confirm and reconfirm the spelling of her name.
