Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Leanna

Leanna is a name that developed one of two ways. Initially it probably started out as a mutation of “Liana” which was a short form of names like Liliana or Juliana. A liana is also the name of woodsy vine that climbs vertically in dense tropical forest regions, taking root in the soil and securing itself to trees for support and to reach sunlight above the canopy. Due to its tangled strangulation of trees and the natural pathway it offers to animals to feed off the trees, lianas tend to thwart the longevity and reproduction of its host trees. Some trees have therefore evolved into species that obstruct lianas from adhering to them. Secondly, and most commonly, Leanna is merely the pairing of the two names: Lee and Anna (see those two name pages for more detailed information). For the most part, Leanna was coined as yet another pretty three syllable name with the popular “-anna” suffix.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME LEANNA

Leanna has been around in America longer than we would have thought (it feels more like a late 20th century creation). However, this name did appear on the charts as far back as the late 1800s. While Leanna has never been a very popular choice, she has managed to secure herself to the charts with permanency since the late 1930s. The name has mainly been bestowed with relatively low frequency reaching as high as semi-moderation in the late 1980s and early 90s. Back in the late 80s, the soap opera “The Young and the Restless” brought attention to the name when the delightfully psychotic character of Leanna Love Randolph was introduced (back in the 1980s naming children after a daytime character was fairly trendy). Today the name seems to be parking itself around 700th place (not very common). With the many other “-anna” names out there (i.e., Adrianna Arianna, Brianna, Deanna, Ivanna) we wondered why this one hasn’t been embraced as readily. Perhaps it feels too twenty-years-ago. Also, some parents spell the name LeAnna.
