Avah

Avah is an Americanized fanciful rendition of the classical girl’s name Ava. It’s difficult to pinpoint the etymology of the name Ava, so the only thing we can say for sure is that the origin is uncertain. The roots are thought to be Germanic, using the short form of various female names containing the element “avi” which possibly means “desired” (Avis and Aveline are some such female names used in medieval times). There is also the possibility that Ava is associated with the Latin “avis” meaning “bird, birdlike”. Furthermore Ava may have been coined as a later version of Eve which comes from the Hebrew name "Havva" (from “hayya”) meaning “life, lively”. The name Ava also means “voice, sound” in Persian. The earliest Ava we could find who may have played some role in bringing prominence to the name among medieval Europeans was a 9th century saint. St. Ava was born into nobility as the daughter of the Frankish King Pepin of Aquitaine. According to her legend, St. Ava was miraculously cured of blindness before becoming a Benedictine nun. Another illustrious Ava from the Middle Ages was a 11/12th century German poet Frau Ava of Melk who is considered the first female writer of any genre in her language. Today, Ava is a very popular name among English speakers throughout the world. It’s a top 10 choice for girls in the United States, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and Australia and a Top 20 in England and Northern Ireland. Since Ava is so crazy popular right now some parents have opted to arbitrarily add an “h” in a meager attempt to make it look more original.
