Devyn

Devyn is a unisex respelling of Devin, largely considered a name of Irish origin (although with uncertain meaning). Devin is likely derived from one of two Irish-Gaelic names: Damhán which means “fawn” or “little deer” from the elements “damh” (stag, ox) and the diminutive suffix “-án”. Alternately, Devin may be derivative of Dubhán, another Irish masculine name from “dubh” (black) with the suffix “-án” meaning “little black one”. It is also speculated that Devin developed into an Irish surname brought to Ireland by the Normans in the 12th century. In this case, Devin comes from the Old French “devin” (from the Latin “divinus”) meaning “godlike, heavenly”. In medieval France, Devin was a title bestowed on the highest of kings as a way of conveying a sense of perfection and excellence. As given name, Devin is mostly used by Americans and mainly bestowed on baby boys. The Devyn spelling is considered much more gender-neutral.
