Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Tyler

Tyler comes from the transferred use of an English surname originating as an occupation describing a “tile-maker”. In Olde English, “tigele” was the all-encompassing word for “tile, brick, roofing shingle”, borrowed from the Latin “tegula” (“covering”). A tile-maker would have been considered an important and respectable trade in medieval England and he most likely made a good living. In fact, Tyler is one of the oldest recorded surnames in England first appearing in the late 12th century and rendered as “le Tuiler” (apparently one of the earliest Knights Templar). Another early surname bearer was Walter "Wat" Tyler, the leader of the English Peasants Revolt of 1381. Using surnames as first names has been a long-time practice in the naming styles of America (especially for boys), but other English-speaking countries occasionally do the same. Tyler was first popularized as a given name among Americans in the 19th century, largely influenced by our 10th President, John Tyler (1790-1862). Today Tyler enjoys widespread usage outside of America. It’s currently most popular in Scotland followed closely by Australia, England and Northern Ireland. Tyler also continues to do quite well in the United States and Canada.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME TYLER

Tyler appeared sporadically on the U.S. male naming charts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; however, it wasn’t until 1946 that the name finally began to stick. Slowly but surely the name kept gaining in popularity as the years progressed. Tyler advanced to America’s Top 100 list for the first time in 1981 and from there he continued to climb even further. The name reached its peak popularity in 1993 and 1994 when it was the 5th most common baby boy’s name in the country (beaten only by Michael, Christopher, Matthew and Joshua). Over 60,000 baby boys were named Tyler in those two years alone. Technically a unisex mane, Tyler also has a history of being used for girls since the mid-1980s, but it has largely been replaced by Taylor. For the most part, we consider this little “tile-maker” almost exclusively masculine.

WITH THE NAME TYLER

Yes, we know that "Tyler" is his last name, but we wanted to throw him in here given his obvious influence on the popularity of the name Tyler as a given name in America. John Tyler was the 10th President of the United States. In the previous term, he had been William Henry Harrison’s VP – and when Harrison died suddenly of pneumonia within a year of his term, Tyler ascended to the Chief Executive position. A southern gentleman (he hailed from Virginia), Tyler had a long political career. He wants power and he has a plan, which isolated him from many. Seen as aloof, stubborn, aristocratic and independent – he was a one-term President. Nonetheless, his presidency is marked by two important achievements: the annexation of Texas and a treaty with England to establish the Canadian border. Oh, and the man also procreated 15 children in his lifetime!
