Jaden and Jayden showed up on the U.S. male naming charts for the first time in the same year: 1994. In that year, Jaden was actually the preferred spelling over Jayden. In fact, the Jayden spelling did not surpass the popularity of Jaden until 2003. While Jayden has soared up the popularity charts in the past few years, Jaden hasn’t been able to keep up by comparison. Barely a Top 100 favorite baby boy’s name, Jaden is on the brink of losing its coveted position. Both Jayden and Jaden – and all of their brethren – are squarely in the category of “trendy” names. One clear indicator of “trendy” is when a name starts to get repurposed through an excessive amount of spelling variations. Jaiden, Jaydon, Jaeden, Jadyn, Jaydin, Jaidyn, Jaydan, blah, blah, blah. It’s obnoxious at worst and confusing at best. Regardless of this small irritant, the name’s attraction for many American parents cannot be denied (as evidenced by its ϋber-popularity), even if kindergarten teachers across the country struggle to keep up with the spelling variations.
