Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Maddox

Maddox is mainly the transferred use of a Welsh surname meaning "son of Madoc." The name Madoc has Celtic roots and is said to mean ‘generous, forgiving’ while other sources indicate the meaning as ‘fortunate.’ In Welsh mythology, Madoc (or Madog) was a legendary prince of the 12th century who purportedly sailed to the New World three hundred years before Christopher Columbus. The supposed son of a real prince of Gwynedd in Wales, Madoc was forced to hit the high seas to flee the bloody dispute at home among his father’s many heirs. He and his fellow seafarers allegedly reached America in the 1100s and intermingled with the Native Americans which resulted in a tribe of Welsh Indians speaking a form of European languages somewhere on the American frontier. Many historic and anthropological attempts have been made to prove these legends, but none so far successful. These stories were romanticized and perpetuated during Elizabethan times in an attempt to lay claim to the New World for the English kingdom. In the 15th century, a Welsh poet laid these words to paper about Madoc/Madog: “Splendid Madog… / Of Owain Gwynedd’s line; / He desired not land… / Or world wealth but the sea.” A colorful story indeed and fun to believe if nothing else.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME MADDOX

Maddox’s use as a male given name in America has less than a 10 year old history. The name first appeared on the U.S. popularity charts in 2003; it debuted at the impressive position of #582. This is a clear example of a name being entirely influenced by pop culture. Once a complete unknown, the name Maddox came roaring into the American psyche in 2002 when Angelina Jolie named her adoptive son Maddox in March of that year. As her celebrity increased, so too did the name Maddox. In fact, her little boy is practically a celebrity in his own right today! The name is a Top 200 favorite today after less than 10 years – quite an impressive achievement. However, as with many fast-moving trends, what goes up must come down. In the past couple of years, the growth of Maddox appears to have reached a plateau. Maddox is a name with “cool,” “hip” and “different” written all over it. Unfortunately, when a name becomes overused, it loses all of these qualities. It’s not quite in the “over-used” category and for this reason we’re glad to see the name wane in usage. It’s just too special to become another clichéd trend.
