Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Izaiah

Izaiah is a modern Americanized respelling of Isaiah who was one of the most important of the Major Prophets in the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament. The name comes from Hebrew (Yeshayahu) meaning “God is salvation.” Isaiah’s prophesies are important to the Christians since they are believed to foretell the Messiah. They are important to the Jews since Isaiah prophesized that the Children of Israel will be exiled from their homeland but God will not forget them and He will bring them back. Isaiah has long been established as a Jewish name, and also one taken up by the Puritans in the 17th century. Outside of the African-American community, the name was not used widely in the United States until very recently. Swapping the “s” out for a “z” is a late 20th century coinage.
