Reed

While Reed has maintained a constant position on the American male naming charts, the name has never achieved anything beyond low to moderate usage. It’s just one of those names that each year somewhere between 500 and 1000 little boys will get. As such, Reed is a familiar name (having been around for a long time) but is far from being trendy or overused; In fact, Reed has never been a name of particular fashion. It’s a simple, straight-forward, one-syllable name. There’s nothing pretentious or fancy about it. It just has that cheerful ‘ruddy’ quality that makes it a charming choice for a little red-headed baby boy. Reed could also be considered a musically inspired name since they are mouthpieces on most woodwind instruments proving the vibration behind the sound. From this perspective, Reed has a certain “jazzy” quality which is appealing. Today, many people feel that Reed (or Reid) are nice sounding middle names, but perhaps a little too boring as a first name by the standards of today’s naming fashions. Although with surnames being all the rage these days, Reed is definitely one of the oldest last names in use as a given name making him quite the trailblazer from that perspective.
