Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Karson

Karson is an Americanized respelling of the Scottish surname Carson – a name whose etymology is unknown or uncertain, although it likely originated as a place name in Scotland. Scottish Corsans or Carsans (recorded as early as the 13th century) were an ancient Galloway family whose lineage ended in the late 15th century. The early name holders of the Carsons were high-ranking administrative officials of Dumfries and known for their ferocity. Kit Carson, the famous American frontiersman, is rather true to form from that perspective. Joseph Carson was a Scottish-born American who gave considerable assistance to the Independence movement in the 18th century. Carson as given name is almost exclusive to North America (i.e., the United States and Canada).

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KARSON

While the masculine given name Carson has been on the U.S. popularity charts for over 100 years, Karson only first appeared in 1999 (Carsen is another altered spelling which debuted on the charts in 2008). Oh, and watch out little boys, because a female “Karsyn” just came to town. The strong and quick two-syllable sound of this name, coupled by the “-son” suffix makes Karson a masculine sounding name. Hopefully, America parents of little girls will use it sparingly so it doesn’t get emasculated like other Surnames taken hostage on the female charts (think: Madison, Addison and Taylor – all of these names were originally masculine!). Don’t worry though, little boys still have 95% market share on this name. We prefer the traditional spelling of Carson because it’s most associated with the adventurous and daring Kit Carson, one of the favorite pioneers of the Old West and after which the state capitol Carson City, Nevada is named.
