Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Javon

Javon is a late 20th century name invention coined by African-Americans in the United States some time during the 1970s. Javon is one of several unique names created and adopted within the Black communities of America shortly after the Civil Rights Movement and coinciding with a period of time when Black National Pride was soaring. African-Americans began to exert their own individualism through unique naming practices, expressions of independence from the status quo. Blacks in America either adopted names from continental Africa, they assumed Arabic monikers within Black Islamic communities, and they also began to invent names out of the blue. Javon, in particular, could be a simple mutation on the obscure Biblical name Javan. Javan appears in the Book of Genesis as the grandson of Noah. He was the son of Noah’s son Japheth, from whom all Greek people are purportedly descended. The Hebrew Javan (Yavan) was used in reference to Greek people in general. Whether or not African-Americans had this Biblical Javan in mind when they created Javon, we’re not sure.

Javon first appeared on the male naming charts in 1976 and quickly grew in popularity as it found favor within the African-American community. The name hit its peak popularity right as we turned into the 21st century at around position #350. Since the name is almost exclusively used among Blacks in America, we don’t expect it to gain much more usage. It’s not to say that other ethnicities don’t use Javon occasionally, but it is more distinctly Black than Hispanic or White. Plus, J names like Jamari and Jamarian have gained more notice and therefore more usage among African-Americans in more recent years. Javon may have seen his heyday already. Still, the name is a nice sounding, ethnically appealing two-syllable masculine name with a “coolness” factor all his own. Javon is definitely unique and we like its possible connection to the ancient Greeks. After all, we owe much of our Western culture to those intellectually rigorous people! Javon is also an 8 in numerology – a very powerful number.
