Kristian

The spelling of Kristian has only been around on the U.S. male naming charts since 1967. It was obviously riding the popularity wave of Christian which has been a staple choice among baby boys since the latter half of the 20th century. It is doubtful that Kristian was popularized in American by people of Scandinavian or Finnish descent. Rather, the more plausible reason behind Kristian’s recent and moderate success is owed more to different (arguably more unique) spelling alternatives that American parents find so appealing. Regardless, Kristian is a legitimate spelling but native to Nordic countries. Christian is the traditional English spelling; but Americans are not always the hugest fans of tradition, so Kristian offers them another way to render their child’s common name (essentially a way to differentiate the child from the scores of other Christians out there). Christian and his brothers have become fashionable names and are probably bestowed more for stylistic reasons than for notions of religiosity. Still, all of the Chris/Kris names remain respectful options for Christian parents. What better way to demonstrate your belief system that to brand your child a “follower of Christ” from the get-go?
