Mohammed

Mohammed is an Arabic name; a transcription of Muhammad which means “praiseworthy” and “possessor of fine qualities”. Muhammad is without question the most popular male name in the Muslim world which is fast approaching two billion people. As most people are aware, Muḥammad ibn-‘Abd-Allāh ibn-‘Abd-al-Muttalib was a 7th century prophet and founder of the Islamic religion – hence the popularity of this name among Muslims. Another famous bearer was Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, a 9th-century Persian mathematician, scientist, and inventor of algebra. It appears that European Muslims prefer the Mohamed and Mohammed spellings the most. They are most commonly used in Belgium where Islam is the largest minority religion. In fact, Muslims make-up nearly 25% of the population in the Belgium capital of Brussels where Mohamed is the #1 most common male name. The Mohammed spelling specifically is also ranked remarkably high in England, Sweden, the Netherlands and Scotland. Compared to the United States, all of these European countries have a much higher concentration of Muslims per capita.
