Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Trevon

Trevon is mainly an African-American spin on the Celtic name Trevor. The name Trevor is the transferred use of a Welsh surname derived from a place name. Trevor comes from the Welsh or Cornish elements “tref” (meaning settlement or farmstead) and “fõr” (meaning large). The word “tref” is also connected to the Irish Gaelic “treabhadh” which means “ploughing”. Trefor is most notably the name of a peaceful seaside village on the northwest coast of Wales in Gwynedd but is also shared by many other settlements and villages throughout Wales and Cornwall. Trevor’s popularity peaked in the United States during the 1990s, so it’s no surprise that Trevon came on to the scene for the first time in 1989. We also found a similar sounding ancient Greek name “Tryphon”, from “tryphe” (τρυφη) meaning “delicate, soft”. This rarely heard name was borne by Saint Tryphon of Campsada (present-day Turkey) who was martyred in the 3rd century under Roman rule for his Christian beliefs. Saint Tryphon had been a gooseherder and was considered a healer of animals and the patron saint of gardeners. He was therefore often evoked in prayer by farmers. This connection pairs nicely with the “large farm” etymology of the Celtic Trevor.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME TREVON

Trevon officially came to notice in 1989 when he first landed a spot on the Top 1000 list of American boy names. This was shortly after Trevor became a Top 100 name in the United States and was taking off in popularity. African-American parents took this old Celtic moniker and swapped the “r” for an “n” thus creating Trevon. Trevon showed immediate improvements during the 1990s and reached his peak usage in 1997 at position #313 on the charts. Since the turn of the 21st century, however, Trevon has been experiencing backwards momentum and is now no longer a fashionable choice among African-Americans. We still think this one is a fresh, modern twist on Trevor. It’s also a great name choice for a farm boy. Trey is an obvious pet form.
