Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jamar

Jamar is a fusion of two names: the Arabic Jamal and the French Lamar. In Arabic, Jamal (جمال) means “beauty, good-looks”. Lamar is a surname of Norman-French origin derived from the Old French “la mare” which translated to “the pool” or “the pond” (“la mer” means “the sea” in modern French). A case could be made that Jamar means “beautiful sea” or “beautiful water”. In the Somali language, a Jama is one who brings together the people (i.e., an elderman). Perhaps it was this word in mind when Jamar was coined in the early 1970s. In any case, the name Jamar is distinct to African-Americans.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME JAMAR

Jamar landed a position on America’s Top 1000 list of most popular boy’s names in 1972. The early 1970s marked a new period of naming styles within the African-American community and Jamar is a product of this emerging development. As Blacks in American society began to establish a stronger national identity after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, names chosen for the little ones started to mirror this new unique voice. African-Americans looked to the continent of Africa for creative names which reflected their African heritage. Names were also chosen in honor of new-founded Islamic beliefs for some (which is why you see a lot of Arabic names in the Black community). Names were also creatively blended together to arrive at original recreations of themselves. Jamar is an example of this particular practice. Not only that, but Jamar even recreated himself into Jamari, Jamarcus and Jamarion. As a name restricted to one section of the population, Jamar has never gotten beyond position #362 out of 1000 (1982). Still, the name was quite successful in its own circles, particularly during the 1980s.
