Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Brogan

Brogan is the transferred use of an Irish clan name from the sept “Ó Brógáin” (descendents of Brógáin) with debatable etymologies. Traditionally the name traces back to Broccán Clóen, a 6th century Irish cleric and scribe of St. Patrick who came to be known as St. Brogan. The Ó Brógáin family name could be derivative of the Gaelic word “bróg” meaning “shoe” in reference to shoemakers. St. Brogan’s Gaelic name Broccán could come from the Gaelic word “broc” meaning “badger”, an animal sacred to the Celts. We have also read that Ó Brógáin literally translates to descendents of the “young sorrowful one”. Most likely we think the personal name Brógán means “little shoe” from the aforementioned Gaelic “bróg” plus the Gaelic diminutive “-án” suffix meaning little. In honor of the saint, it seems Brogan can be used for either boys or girls and has a history of being unisex in Great Britain and Ireland.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME BROGAN

Brogan is new to the American list of names, and it’s pretty much considered exclusively masculine here in the States. The name first appeared on the charts in 2008 and is still only used with very light frequency. In other words, Brogan is not one of the more popular surnames-turned-first-names in circulation right now. But it’s certainly more original than the overused Logan. Brogan is one of the more distinctly Irish sounding of all the surnames and akin to names like Finnegan, Sullivan, Keegan and Teagan. As such, Brogan might sound funny on a kid without Irish heritage. We also think it’s too masculine sounding as a girl’s name (but some parents prefer this). It’s all about that manly “Bro” suffix; friends of your teenaged Brogan are destined to call him “Bro”. You might also want to consider Brogan as a name for your pet amphibian. Why? “Broga” is the Welsh word for “frog”. You know what happens to frogs, right? They grow up to become princes.
