Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jaycob

Jaycob is an Americanized respelling of Jacob, a name derived from the Hebrew "Yaakov" probably from the word "akev" which literally translates to "at the heel". This etymology makes perfect sense if you’re familiar with Jacob’s story in the Bible. He was one of the twin sons born to Isaac and Rebecca and he "came out with his hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob" (Genesis 25:26). The Lord told Rebecca that the younger (Jacob) would be stronger, and that the older (Esau) would serve the younger. As the Biblical story progresses, the cunning Jacob eventually “supplanted” his older brother by cleverly stealing Esau’s birthright and father's blessing. "Is he not rightly named Jacob?" Esau asks in Genesis 27:36. "For he has supplanted me these two times." Therefore, the name Jacob is also associated with the verb “to supplant” (displace, usurp). As the patriarch of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, Jacob is, of course, a tremendously significant figure in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), so Jacob has always been a name of choice among Jewish people. However, after the Reformation, religious dissenters like the Puritans began to embrace these Old Testament names, too. Today Jacob is experiencing a revival like never before. He’s popular. Like scary popular. As in Jacob is the #1 name for baby boys in the United States and Canada right now. And he’s super high ranking in all other English-speaking nations and most of Scandinavia. So… it stands to follow that some American parents will start changing the spelling just to be “different”. Jaycob is an example of this typical American practice.

Jaycob just showed up on the Top 1000 list of baby boy names for the first time in 2009. It looks like Americans might already be tiring of it, however. It seems to be on its way back down the list. And we’re not that surprised. Jaycob just looks a little weird. Like you want to pronounce the words separately: Jay + Cob (as in corn on the cob). Will Jacub, Jaecob and Jaicob soon follow? Ugh. We say stick with Jacob or Jakob.
