Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Legend

Legend is an English vocabulary word, a noun used to indicate a “narrative” describing a situation or event of some great proportions. The English got the word from the French (légende) which is ultimately derived from the Medieval Latin “legenda” meaning “(things) to be read” from the Latin verb “legere” meaning “to read, select, gather”. The word was used originally in reference to church readings about various saints, specific selections which were made for that day’s mass celebration. A legend has an extended definition of that which is mythical, exaggerated or non-historic. Such “legends” of various saints celebrated in medieval times included miraculous stories describing events which doubtfully occurred (e.g., a beheaded saint carries his own head for six miles before perishing, a dead saint’s body remains intact despite being dead for centuries, etc.). These so-called “legends” (particularly regarding Catholic saints) which were largely perpetuated in the Middle Ages became vital to the Christian belief systems during uncertain and precarious times. It was the Protestants who began using the term “legend” when describing the unrealistic events surrounding early saints in order to contrast them with accurately historical narratives concerning martyrs venerated by the Protestants who had separated themselves from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century. In the modern sense, a Legend is still generally considered to be a “tall tale” or a “popular myth” (with no historic proof). “Legendary” is also used to describe a person admired for possessing some great talent or skill, or for achieving some great triumph. As a masculine given name, Legend is an American invention used almost exclusively in the United States.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME LEGEND

Legend is a bold choice in a name. Let’s just get that point out of the way. There’s no two ways about it, naming one’s son Legend is akin to names like Ace, King, Major or Prince. Parents are making loud statements to the world with such names. But, hey, more power to you. Of course we only hope that a kid named Legend doesn’t grow up to be a Legend in his own mind, if you get our point. Vocabulary word names always run the risk of being ironic and therefore a subject of mockery one day. There are more subtle ways to get your point across, such as using names like Maximus (Latin for “greatest”), Victor (Latin for “winner”) or Nicolas (from the Greek for “people of victory”). But if you’re hell-bent on getting straight to the point with a name like Legend, then we say go for it, as long as you consider the potential pitfalls and future eye-rolls. We applaud your choice from a proud parent perspective and think it’s rather sweet. At least we can agree that your baby boy is most definitely a “legend” in your mind. And why shouldn’t he be?

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME LEGEND

Katrina Van Tassel is the pretty, but sly-minded young heiress who uses Ichabod Crane to further her own intentions in Washington Irving’s 1820 story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. She has it all – looks, money and intelligence – and Ichabod Crane, the wily schoolmaster, wants it all. But Katrina is not to be trifled with. She herself has her eyes on the town hunk, Abraham "Brom” van Brunt, who feels likewise, thank you very much. The two men vie for her attentions at a party given by her father, where Ichabod seems to take the upper hand. Crafty Katrina, however, has been toying with Ichabod only to increase Brom’s interest in her, and she carelessly turns down Ichabod’s offer of marriage. Off into the night he goes and meets the Headless Horseman – you know the story – he is never to be seen again, Katrina and Brom marry, and Brom always has a smugly knowing look whenever the subject of Ichabod Crane comes up. Moral of the story: Don’t mess with a girl like Katrina!
