Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Addison

Addison is the transferred use of a Scottish patronymic surname meaning “son of Addie” – Addie being a medieval Scottish Lowlands nickname for Adam. So Addison basically means “son of Adam”. Adam is, of course, a name borne from the Bible as the first man created by God. It comes from the Hebrew “adamah” meaning “ground, earth” or more literally, “(the one formed from the) ground”. Apropos, “dust from the ground” was the essential ingredient of God’s creation. Adam is also the generic term for “Man” as told in Genesis 5:2. Therefore, Addison means “son of the ground” or “son of man”. Addison has a longer history as a masculine given name; only in recent years (since the mid-1990s) has Addison seen success as a female given name, usage of which is mainly restricted to the United States, Canada and Australia. The more popular Addison became for girls, the less popular it was for boys. It finally fell off the male charts in 2009 so now the name is considered almost exclusively female. For example, of all the U.S. babies given the name Addison in 2012, 98% were female babies and only 2% were boys.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME ADDISON

The name Addison has a much longer history in America as a masculine personal name (dating back to the 19th century), but it never achieved the kind of success we are now seeing for girls. Once Addison hit the girl’s popularity charts in 1994 there was no stopping her trendy success. It is now the 14th most commonly given baby girl's name in the country. For whatever reason (perhaps due to the trendiness of Madison?), Addison's popularity seems unstoppable for the girls. Daughters are now given "son of" names in droves (also consider Emerson). The fact that this particular name is quite masculine by its very nature, this doesn't seem to dissuade parents of little girls. Unfortunately, it's only made it a less attractive name for baby boys.
