Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Roxanne

Roxanne is the English and French form of an ancient Greek name Roxana (Ρωξάνη) which was ultimately derived from the Bactrian-Persian Roshanak (روشنک) meaning “dawn” (or “bright, radiant one”). Roshanak was the daughter of a Bactrian (present day northern Afghanistan) nobleman who became the first wife of Alexander the Great around 330 B.C. after he conquered the Persian Empire (apparently he was completely infatuated with her). In other words, Roxana is a very ancient name! However, it was not widely used among English speakers until 2,000 years later when, in the 18th century, English author Daniel Defoe wrote a novel called “Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress” (1724) which brought some notice to this ancient Persian name. More literary currency was added to the name by way of Edmond Rostand, a French dramatist who wrote a well-known play called “Cyrano de Bergerac” (1897) in which the very beautiful and highly intelligent Roxane is play’s titular character’s object of desire. See literary references below for more information. Today, in the 21st century, Roxanne is most popular in England where she continues to be used with mild moderation. Rox, Roxie and Roxy are common nicknames.

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME ROXANNE

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ROXANNE

Roxanne is one of those names that came into and out of fashion very quickly. The name first appeared on America’s Top 1000 list in 1936. In less than 20 years, the name reached its high point on the charts at position #158 in 1954. It’s unclear what prompted the initial popularity of Roxanne by the 1950s, but she managed to maintain high-moderate levels of success through the 1980s. Oddly enough, the popular 1978 song “Roxanne” by The Police did little to improve the name’s standing on the charts, but it does appear that the 1987 film “Roxanne” (a modern adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac starring Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah) had a positive impact (although minor). What’s weird is that Roxanne dropped very quickly down the charts in the 1990s and pretty much off the American radar by the 21st century. We feel certain, though, that there will be a “dawning” revival of Roxanne sometime in the not-so-distant future. Radiant Roxanne and Foxy Roxy are just simply too hard to ignore.
