Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kenton

Kenton is the transferred use of an Olde English surname derived from a place name, from “cyne-tun” meaning “the King’s farm.” Today such villages exist in England spelled in modern form: Kenton, Kington and Kingston, illustrating the fact that originally these lands were held or owned by the English King. Those assigned the surname Kenton in medieval times would have been former tenants of the King’s farm who moved to another location (their original hometown name would have served to identify them post-relocation). The first recorded evidence of this surname appeared in the infamous Domesday Book of 1086 rendered as “Kynetone” in Devon. It’s unclear when this family name transferred into a masculine given name, but likely as far back as the 19th century.
