Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Amethyst

Amethyst is a semiprecious stone; essentially it’s the violet-colored variety of quartz (quartz being one of the most common minerals in the earth’s continental crust). The English borrowed the word “amethyst” from the French (from the Latin amethystus). Ultimately, however, the word comes from the Ancient Greek elements “ἀ-“ meaning “not” and “μέθυστος” meaning “intoxicated.” In other words, amethyst means “not drunk” in reference to the ancient Greek’s belief that the stone prevented drunkenness. In fact, people of the ancient world wore amethyst rings before drinking wine out of goblets studded with amethyst in an effort to keep them sober-minded and coherent. If only! The traditional birthstone of February, the amethyst is also symbolic of protection and positivity. Like other gemstone names (Pearl, Ruby, Jade), Amethyst is occasionally used for baby girls, although it is much more rare compared to those others.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME AMETHYST

As a female given name in the United States, Amethyst has never been used with enough frequency to land a spot on America’s Top 1000 list. In fact, only 75 baby girls were given this name in 2012. While quartz is an abundant mineral on earth, Amethyst is quite rare as a female name. If you like gemstone names, this one is much more original and underused than, say, Jade or Ruby. It’ also a great name for baby girls born in February (since the amethyst is that month’s birthstone). Pretty and unique, Amethyst could even be considered an alternate name for Violet. We also love the fact that Amethyst is a “cheerful” number three in numerology – perhaps she is a little intoxicated after all!
