A masculine personal name derived from a Medieval Scottish surname meaning “fjord-lands,” from the Old Scottish-Gaelic elements loch “lake, fjord” and lann “enclosure, land.” This was a name adopted among the Scots at a very early date and was originally given as a byname to Viking settlers in Scotland, referring specifically to a “Scandinavian” or one from the “fjord-lands” (carrying with it an added meaning of “stranger”).  The nickname eventually gave rise to the surnames Lachlan and MacLachlan in the Middle Ages in both Scotland and Ireland. The first recorded evidence of the surname appeared as Lochlainn MacLochlainn in the “Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland” in the mid-11th century.
