Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Abdiel

Abdiel is an obscure Biblical name from the Hebrew עֲבְדִּיאֵל meaning “servant of God” (from “abad” meaning “servant” and “el” meaning “God”). The name only appears once in the Old Testament in 1 Chronicles 5:15 which states “Ahi the son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was chief in their fathers’ houses.” There is, however, a more illustrious story concerning Abdiel in John Milton’s 1667 masterpiece “Paradise Lost”. Abdiel can be found in Books V-VI as a seraph (an angel of the highest rank) and described among the Seraphim as the one with the most “zeal” and who strictly obeyed the commands of God. When Lucifer provokes rebellion among the other angels Abdiel is the only “faithful found / Among the faithless” and condemns Satan for his actions. Abdiel goes to inform God of the brewing revolt, but battle plans are already in progress. Abdiel then proves himself to be a faithful “servant of God” in the ensuring clash between good and evil. Aside from this important reference in terms of Abdiel’s character in “Paradise Lost”, the name has also been used in various other literary works. Regardless, Abdiel remains a very obscure and rarely used masculine given name.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME ABDIEL

Abdiel first appeared on the American male naming charts in 2008 and it has seen very modest increases since then. We must take a moment to applaud the few parents who have actually managed to resurrect this ancient Hebrew name. The references in both the Bible and “Paradise Lost” are so obscure and little-known it’s amazing Abdiel is even in circulation as a given name at all. The name’s etymology (i.e., “servant of God”) is appealing to religiously strict parents for obvious reasons, but Abdiel is also a heroic character from one of the greatest pieces of English literature ever composed (and some scholarly critics surmise that Abdiel represented John Milton himself). Even if Abdiel is not one of our top favorites we still congratulate the parents out there thoughtful enough to have found it.
