Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Aditya

Aditya is a Hindu masculine name and currently the 4th most commonly used baby boy name in India (2011). It’s derived from Sanskrit आदित्य meaning “belonging to Aditi” referring to the offspring of the mother goddess Aditi. Aditi comes from Sanskrit meaning “The Boundless One” and is representative of the eternal cycle of life, death and rebirth; she is the all-wise mother and personification of the infinite. Aditi is a supreme goddess who holds up the sky, sustains all existence and nourishes the earth. According to Hindu mythology, Aditi gave birth to seven sons known as the Adityas (the seven celestial deities). These Adityas preside over everything from the sky, ocean, Milky Way, solar system, and weather to marriage, domestic tranquility, friendship, honesty, wealth, health and war. It’s no wonder that the Indian culture embraces the name Aditya! (note: we do not yet have a Hindu origin category so we are calling this name American for now).

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME ADITYA

The name Aditya is fairly new to the American male naming charts, first appearing in 1999. We’re guessing the name is used almost exclusively within the Indian-American population, a population which has grown due to higher Indian immigration in response to the fast-growing technology sector. But because the Indian community is still rather small (about 1% of the overall population), we don’t expect Aditya to grow super high on the charts. It’s a charming name and very exotically cool sounding to the English ear. We also love the origin of the name’s etymology. Who wouldn’t want to be the son of a female goddess with boundless energy?
