Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Adriel

Adriel is a pretty obscure Biblical name coming from the Hebrew meaning “followers or flock of God”. In the book of 1 Samuel 18:19 Adriel is introduced as the son-in-law of King Saul. Apparently, Saul promised his daughter Merab to David first, but then about-faced on his pledge and instead delivered Merab unto Adriel for marriage (David eventually marries Saul’s other daughter Michal). Adriel and Merab have five sons who are all killed by the Gibeonites, suggesting that perhaps this union was ill-fated or cursed to begin with. As we said, the Biblical reference is obscure and most people probably never knew Adriel actually originated as a given name from the Bible. Nonetheless, many religiously devout people must be drawn to the name’s etymology (flock of God). The name Adriel appears to be a newly adopted name in the 21st century despite its ancient roots.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME ADRIEL

Adriel did not appear on the U.S. popularity charts until this century in 2002; although the name is showing remarkable upwards momentum. Today, about 10 years later, Adriel is used with light moderation but his climb up the charts in such a short timeframe is noteworthy. It’s unclear what’s prompted a sudden interest in this nearly never before used name – but one thing is clear: an impressive number of new parents are “flocking” to this ancient Hebrew name. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that Adriel sounds a lot like Ariel (giving it a feminine quality) as well as Adrian (another unisex name). Adriel is an original choice, but not an invented one. This is a name with decisive meaning.
