Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Aisling

Aisling is an Irish female name from the Irish-Gaelic word “aislinge” meaning “dream, vision.”  The type of dream is specific to a vision of a beautiful woman from the spirit world. Once dreamt, the dreamer can no longer be content again.  It was a concept developed by Irish language poets in the 17th and 18th centuries, first introduced by Aodhagán Ó Rathaille (1670-1726) who was considered the “father of the aisling” (Gaelic: athair na haislinge).  Essentially, Ireland was personified as the “aisling” (a beautiful, heavenly woman) in politically-charged poetry. Upheaval in Ireland in the late 17th century was marked by the ongoing wars between the encroaching Protestants and the native Catholics resulting in Penal Laws against the Irish-Catholics (preventing them from land-ownership and power of any kind).  During this period, the once esteemed Irish-Gaelic filí (poets) were greatly marginalized and the Irish language became nearly extinct.  Enter Aisling. She wailed against the oppression of her people and called upon the men of Ireland to save her from peril.  The traditional Irish-Gaelic spelling of this name is Aisling, but it has often been anglicized to Ashling and Aislinn. Today, Aisling is a super popular girl’s name in Ireland – ranked #42 in 2012.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME AISLING

Aisling has never been used with enough frequency in the United States to land a position on America’s Top 1000 list.  Like Aoife, Niamh, Saoirse and Siobhan, this one is simply too Irish-Gaelic for the average American parent. For instance, a mere 46 baby girls were given the name Aisling in 2013, while 82 were named Aislin and 103 Aislinn. There is also some confusion regarding pronunciation, though in traditional Irish-Gaelic it’s “ASH-ling.”  Obscure, beautiful and historically significant, all of the Aisling spellings are great choices for parents who want to celebrate their baby girl’s Irish heritage.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME AISLING

Aisling is the Irish for a dream or vision, expressed as a poetic genre that arose in 17th/18th century Irish literature. The country of Ireland appears alternately as a beautiful woman or as an old hag in a vision to the poet. The woman decries the state of affairs in Ireland and it is understood that only a return of exiled King James II to the throne and the restoration of Roman Catholicism in the regal Stuart line will save the day. Aisling developed from an earlier form in which the woman is always beautiful, embodies the season of spring and love, and could care less about who is on the throne. This appears to have been adapted from the old French reverdie form popular during the Middle Ages, when many French were given estates in Ireland by the British crown. So there’s always a political angle!
