Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Aleah

Aleah is an Americanized respelling of the Arabic name Aliyya/Aliyah which is derived from “ali” meaning “sublime, exalted”. In the Hebrew language, to make an “aliyah” means to go up toward God, or more specifically, “to rise, ascend”. From this etymological perspective, aliyah refers to the journey of the Jewish people to the Promised Land. The name Aaliyah became trendy in America starting in the mid-1990s in homage to the highly successful and talented pop-star Aaliyah. Variations of her name immediately began to appear on the charts, including Aleah, Alia, Aliya, Aliyah and more recently Aleigha. While all of these names are essentially pronounced exactly the same way, spelling variations like Aleah and Aleigha are further away from the original Arabic or Hebrew word and are therefore much more “American”.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ALEAH

Aleah first appeared on the female naming charts in 1994, which was the same year that Aaliyah and Aliyah showed up. Aaliyah’s popularity mirrored the success of the famous pop-star, and also saw another boost in usage upon the tragic death of the talented singer (she died in 2004 in a plane crash). Typical of American parents, “kree-a-tive” respellings quickly emerged as Aaliyah was gaining steam on the charts. So now there are several variations of this name on the charts. It’s understandable how some parents want to differentiate their daughters from the masses of ϋber-popular names, but at the end of the day, the name sounds the same as the original. Usually, all that’s accomplished is the creation of spelling confusion during the child’s lifetime. Still, Aleah is a more simplistic and straightforward rendering of this now-common name. Aleigha? Um, not so much.
