Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Aloysius

Aloysius is a name that's been used by the English, Germans and Dutch. It developed as a Latinized form of Aloys which was a medieval Provençal form of Louis (Provençal refers to the south-eastern region of France on the Mediterranean adjacent to Italy). The name was notably borne by an especially pious 16th century Italian saint, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, who was a Jesuit priest in the Society of Jesus. While still a theology student at the Roman College, Gonzaga contracted and died from the Plague after selflessly caring for many of its victims. The name was embraced by Roman Catholics in his honor and Pope Benedict named him patron saint of young students.
