Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Anabelle

Most people probably assume that the name Anabelle is an elaborate pairing of the names Ana and Belle; but it’s not. Anabelle is actually derived from an old Anglo-Norman name, Amabel, which is an Old French variant of the Latin “amabilis” meaning ‘loveable.’ The now-defunct name Amabel eventually morphed into Anabel and Mabel. Annabel became a particular favorite in Scotland and was confined there from the 12th century until very recently. Today, it’s a commonplace name throughout the English-speaking world. There are several variants of this name depending on spelling preference (one “N” or two) or the number of syllables (three or four).
