Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Anika

Anika is the German, Dutch and Danish pet form of Anne. Anne is the English form of the Latin Anna which comes from the Hebrew name Hannah from the word “channah” meaning “grace, favor”. The root source of Anna is Hannah, a woman borne from the Bible as the mother of Samuel (a prophet of central importance in the Old Testament). Hannah suffered through torturous years of barrenness and prayed mightily to God promising that if He gave her a child, she would dedicate him to the Lord. Soon afterwards, she conceived and gave birth to a son, Samuel (by the “grace” of God or as a “favor” from Him). Hannah eventually became Latinized to Anna which became anglicized to Anne. Anika developed as a pet form of Anne in many Northern European countries (mainly Germany, Holland and Denmark). Today, Anika (with one “n”) is most popular in Slovenia.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ANIKA

Anika is only a little less popular in America than Annika with two “n”s. First appearing on the American female naming charts in 1972, it took several years for Anika to find her footing. It wouldn’t be until the mid-1990s that Anika finally found her place on the charts. This was right around the time that Annika Sörenstam was making a big splash in women’s professional golf. Thanks to her athletic talent on the golf course, the name Annika became featured in the news a lot, reminding future parents of this darling yet strong German/Scandinavian diminutive for Anne. The Ann/Anne/Anna/Annie names have become so ubiquitous that Anika offers a refreshing alternative. It’s cute while still retaining that no-nonsense Germanic and Nordic strength and vigor. In European countries today Annika with two “n”s is definitely more popular, but it just comes down to spelling preference. The names are pronounced exactly the same. You would be doing your daughter a great “favor” by bestowing upon her this lovely name.
