Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Arya

Arya is a unisex name in the Hindu culture and comes from the Sanskrit meaning “honorable, noble” (Aryan is the masculine form most often used among Indian-Americans). In Hindi the female form is rendered as आर्या. Both Arya and Aryan are popular names in India (see the Aryan name page for more detail). Aside from Arya’s Hindu connection, the name was also made popular by a series of fantasy novels called "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R. R. Martin which feature a character named Arya Stark. There is also an HBO series called “Game of Thrones” about the same. Due to the fan base surrounding these books and television series, Arya is now a name used outside of the Indian-American community.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ARYA

Arya first appeared on the U.S. female naming charts very recently (in 2010). It seems clear that her popularity has more to do with the fantasy series “A Song of Ice and Fire” and subsequent HBO series than the Indian-American population. Obviously fans of “Game of Thrones” on HBO are really drawn to the Arya Stark character. She’s a wild and free tomboyish character who hails from a “noble” family. It seems enough fans of the show/books are using Arya as a name for their baby daughters with enough frequency to land her a spot on the Top 1000 list. And the name is growing in usage year over year so far. It’s still too early to determine Arya’s staying power on the charts but her “honorable” character should help her cause even after the pop-culture frenzy wears off.
