Ashlynn

Ashlynn is an elaborate version of Ashley, which itself is the transferred use of an English surname derived from a place name. "Æsc" is the Old English word for 'ash' and "lëah" means 'wood clearing'. Ashley has been recorded as a given name dating back to the 16th century, although, it was almost exclusively given to boys. In recent years however, the name is almost entirely restricted to girls. Another etymological perspective of the name owes itself to Celtic tradition. The name “Ainslinn” (pronounced ash + ling) derives from the Gaelic word “aisling” which means ‘dream’ or ‘vision.’ The type of dream is specific to a vision of a beautiful woman from the spirit world. Once dreamt, the dreamer can no longer be content again. Ashlynn is a new coinage and variation on Ashley. By adding the “-lynn” suffix, the original unisex name becomes more feminized.
