Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Ashton

The name Ashton is the transferred use of a surname originating in England as a place name. Ashton comes from the Old English “æsc” (ash tree) and “tūn” (settlement, enclosure). While mainly a surname, Ashton has occurred as a forename for at least three hundred years. In Norse mythology, the first man created by the gods was formed from an ash tree. The Celts, impressed with its massive size, associated the ash tree with power, expansion and scale. Its girth, height, and deeply complex root system were all metaphors for the spiritually minded Celtic people. In both Norse/Viking and Celtic folklore, the ash tree was mainly a symbol of protectiveness. Like a gentle giant, the ash tree was also a guardian of children and a healing agent for childhood illnesses. The surname developed in the Middle Ages and appears as “Estun” in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME ASHTON

The name Ashton has been used for both males and females in the United States, but is widely considered a boy’s name. Ashton has provided a masculine replacement for Ashley (once a common boy’s name, but now a common girl’s name). Ashton first shows up on the United States Top 1000 list of boys’ names sporadically at the turn of the 20th century, but it never manages to stick to the charts and eventually rides into the sunset in 1910. It takes 72 years, but Ashton returns from obscurity in 1982. Between the late 1990s and the early 2000s, Ashton jumps about 250 spots on the charts. We think this was somewhat influenced by the celebrity Ashton Kutcher whose career was peaking at that time. 2004 marks the one and only year that Ashton manages to grab a spot on the Top 100 list of most-favored boys’ names (at position #76). The name is decidedly more masculine sounding than Ashley or Asher, so if you like the “Ash” names – this is a fine choice!
