Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Aubree

Aubree is a respelling of Aubrey. The name Aubrey comes to England by way of the Norman French and is derived from the German name “Alberic.” The Germanic words “alb” means ‘elf, supernatural being’ and “ric” means ‘power.’ Alberic was the name of the fair-haired, king of the elves in Germanic mythology. After the Norman Conquest of England, the name Aubrey was common in the latter part of the Middle Ages but eventually diminished in usage. Aubrey was traditionally considered a boys’ name in the English-speaking world until the 1970’s when Americans started using it for girls. Once Aubrey hit a certain level of popularity in the United States, respellings such as Aubree and Aubrie began to appear.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME AUBREE

The new spelling of Aubree first appeared on the U.S. naming charts for girls in 1991. This was about 20 years after Aubrey debuted as a female name following the success of a song called “Aubrey” by the seventies rock-band Bread in 1972. Aubree has never been as popular as Aubrey, but it has grown in usage over the past 20 odd years. Today, Aubree is at the height of her popularity at position #223 on the charts (2010). Americans like to respell names as a method of differentiating their children from a more commonly-used name. They also like to phonetically spell out names (like swapping “ey” with “ee” or “ie”). It’s a little kitschy in our opinion, but it’s a trend that’s so American we cannot ignore it. Regardless of the spelling, the name is pronounced exactly the same so it really comes down to preference. Like the song says: “And Aubrey was her name / A not so ordinary girl or name.” Aubree is even less ordinary. The name has an easy and breezy quality, and seems to embody that “elf-like” character of its etymology.
