Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Audrianna

Audrianna is a slightly more fanciful version of Audriana which is a faux-Latinized form of Audrey (similar to Audrina). In other words, Audrianna is really just a fancy-pants embellishment of Audrey. In Olde English, Audrey used to look like this: Ǽðelprðy, which, broken apart, means “æðel” (noble) and “pryð” (strength). The Olde English name was borne by a popular 7th century English saint originally known as Etheldreda (which was the medieval Latinized form of Ǽðelprðy) but in modern times is more commonly referred to as Saint Audrey. St. Audrey is remembered for maintaining her virginity through two marriages (which we’re sure her husbands found rather frustrating to say the least). In fact, after escaping the advances of her second husband, she ran away and founded an abbey where she lived out her life devoted to Christianity. Perhaps one should reconsider marriage if one intends to remain a virgin, but that’s just our old-fashioned notion of matrimony. Committed virgins, such as nuns, see themselves as the brides of Christ (probably the one husband you don’t want to cheat on, right?). In any case, the name was popularized in Medieval England in homage to Audrey. Ultimately, the name fell out of favor but was revived again in the 19th century. Audrina is a flowery version of this name recently created in the United States; and Audriana/Audrianna are even newer coinages.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME AUDRIANNA

Audriana’s recent appearance on America’s Top 1000 list of favorite baby girl names is owed to reality TV personality Teresa Giudice (notorious for her self-centered role on the Real Housewives of New Jersey). A tabloid darling, Teresa Giudice keeps the names of her four daughters in the news: Gia, Gabriella, Milania, and Audriana. Love her or hate her divisive personality, the woman knows how to stay in the spotlight. It’s no surprise that Audriana suddenly came into circulation as a baby girl’s name the same year she was born (2010) – and then Audrianna followed in 2011 (although we should mention Audrianna made a brief appearance on the American charts once in 1989). The Italian-American mother either chooses bonafide Italian names (i.e., Gia, Gabriella) or else she makes them up to at least SOUND Italian (i.e., Milania, Audriana). It seems that Teresa Giudice’s fans are trying to emulate her style.
