Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Averi

Averi is an American variant spelling of Avery, a name with quite an interesting etymology. It actually originated as a patronymic surname (i.e., passed from the father), from the Norman-French medieval pronunciation of the Olde English masculine name Ælfræd (Alfred). Alfred, in turn, is made up of old Anglo-Saxon elements which meant “elf counsel” indicating some type of mythological supernatural wisdom held by the name bearer. Avery eventually developed from a surname into a successful unisex name. At first it was more popular for baby boys, but eventually the name won out for little girls. As a result, the more feminized forms of Averie and Averi emerged as respellings primarily in the United States, ostensibly as a way to make the gender-neutral name look more female. Today Avery is a Top 20 female name in both the United States and Canada.
