Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Aydan

Aydan is yet another Americanized corruption of the ϋber-popular Irish masculine name Aidan. Aidan is the traditional Irish spelling; an anglicized form of the ancient Gaelic name "Áedán" or "Aodhán." These names are derivative of the Gaelic Áed from "Aodh" meaning "fire" (with the diminutive Irish suffix of “-an” Aidan means “little fire”). In Irish mythology, Áed was the god of the underworld. Aodhán/Aidan was also borne by several ancient High Kings of Ireland as well as a couple important early Irish saints. The older Gaelic versions of the name were relatively common during Antiquity and the early medieval period. Probably the most famous, the 7th century Saint Aidan of Iona established a monastery in Northumbria which brought Christianity to the pagan Anglo-Saxons. The spelling of Aidan is most popular in Ireland and Northern Ireland, but the Northern Irish still use the more ancient variation of Aodhán with some frequency. Aydan is one of those American respellings that parents in the United States are so prone to making. There are now eight respellings of Aidan in circulation today but the only English-speaking nations that embrace these types of “kreatyve” respellings are the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME AYDAN

Aydan is a spelling that appeared on the U.S. male naming charts in 2003. Now that Aiden is a Top 10 name in America parents are trying to find different ways to render this name (in an ill-conceived effort to differentiate their own little guy). This trend has an unintended and unfortunate consequence, however. Once a name is respelled nine different ways (as in the case of Aidan), people start rolling their eyes at the nonsense of it all. It causes confusion and frustration for preschool teachers across America. Plus, kids with non-traditional spellings typically go through life confirming and reconfirming the spelling of their name (which can be a nuisance). We can’t stop the fact that creative respellings is a pervasive American trend (particularly with super popular names), but we can suggest ever so gently that you may want to reconsider. Aiden, Ayden and Aidan are the three most popular spellings right now. At the end of the day do you want an Irish name or do you want an American name? Aydan is definitely American.
