Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Beckham

Beckham is the transferred use of an English surname originating as a place name in Norfolk, England first recorded as “Beccheham”. The Olde English word for a pickaxe-like tool was “becca”, which was bestowed as a nickname of sorts on a person whose occupation it was to make or work with such a tool. The Olde English “ham” referred to a “homestead”. Therefore, Beckham was named for “Becca’s Homestead”. The surname would have been given to identify a person who came from this part of Norfolk, England. The first recorded spelling of Beckham as a surname appeared in the 14th century. Despite any etymological significance to the name, its usage as a forename is owed almost entirely to English soccer star David Beckham. Ironically, the name is used almost exclusively in the United States (a long ways away from Beckham, England).

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME BECKHAM

Although Beckham appeared briefly on the U.S. charts in one year (1903), for all intents and purposes, this surname-turned-first-name didn’t really hit the radar until 2008, the year following the famous Beckham family move to Los Angeles, California. David Beckham is not only an ϋber-talented soccer player, but he is also quite easy on the eyes. He and his wife Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice) are international celebrities and, along with their darling children, a favorite among paparazzi. Therefore, they are constantly in the American media, so the name Beckham has basically been drilled into our collective psyches. As a result, we were not surprised to see Beckham appear on the naming charts; and so far it's showing increased usage year over year. Beckett is the name for erudite literary parents, while Beckham is one for the sports-loving parent. Either that, or they just admire the Adonis that is David Beckham. We know we do! Just be advised: your kid’s soccer playing skills will be carefully scrutinized on the field. Can he live up to that? Something to consider.
