Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Benedict

Benedict is the English form of the Latin Benedictus meaning “blessed.”  The name spread throughout Western Europe in the Middle Ages almost exclusively owing its popularity to St. Benedict, the 6th century Italian Catholic monk and founder of the Benedictine Order.  His “Rule of Benedict” writings were popular among the later establishments of Western European monasteries because it promoted the spirit of balance, moderation and reasonableness between individual zealots and institutionalized expectations. For this reason, St. Benedict is often credited as the founder of Western Christian monasticism. The name became common among Christians and was adopted by 16 popes in total. The French version, Benoît, was largely introduced to the English after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Benedict became the de-facto English version while Bennett developed as a medieval vernacular form. The name is still used with some regularity in England, but not so much in other English-speaking countries today.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME BENEDICT

Leslie is the rich, young, Maryland socialite wooed and won by Texas cattle rancher Jordan “Bick” Benedict, in Edna Ferber’s 1952 novel, Giant, made into a 1956 movie directed by George Stevens. The movie featured Elizabeth Taylor as Leslie, Rock Hudson as Benedict, and the soon-to-die-young James Dean as the vinegar in the mix, Jett Rink. Ms. Taylor perfectly captures the essence of the free spirited Leslie, who puts her shoulder to the grindstone and adapts to life in Texas between the world wars, never quite subjugating herself to the demands of her forceful husband, the “males rule” rule of the day, and the ongoing economic and racial discrimination that plague the countryside. Eventually, Leslie and Bick find that they have grown more alike than apart, and look toward their golden years in a benign unity, having weathered the many obstacles that could easily have been their doom.
