Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Benton

Benton is the transferred use of an English surname derived from a place name. The villages in England so-called Benton were originally recorded as “Bentune” from the Olde English “beonet” (bent grass) and “tūn” (settlement, town). The surname did not appear in writing until the mid 16th century and was originally rendered as “Benntine”. The Benton surname would have been assigned to a person who hailed from one of these "Bentune" towns but relocated someplace else. Their place of birth would provide a unique identifier for the purposes of taxation. As a forename, Benton dates back to at least the 19th century in the United States. Surnames as first names are quite trendy today in the U.S. especially, but they were not uncommon 100+ years ago when children (mostly boys) were given family names of importance (such as a mother’s maiden name).
