Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Blaze

Blaze is a name with two possible etymologies: it’s either a vocabulary word name or it’s a respelling of Blaise. In the first case, Blaze is derived from the Olde English “blæse” meaning “torch, bright flame, fire”. The word finds its roots in the Germanic element “blas-“ meaning “white, shining” (as in white hot fire). In the early Modern Era (c. 1600s) the word “blaze” was also used within some English dialects to identify white marks cut into tree trunks as a way of identifying a new pathway through the woods – which is where we get the term “blazing a new trail”. Aside from the English vocabulary word “blaze” from the Germanic; Blaze could also be a respelling of Blaise, a French masculine name with Latin origins. From the Latin “blaseus”, Blaise means “lisping” and was a name most notably borne by an early 4th century saint, Saint Blaise of Sebastea (modern-day Turkey) who was both a physician and a bishop. However, it wasn’t until much later in the 11th century during the Crusades that the saint’s legend would spread to Western Europe. His Feast Day is February 3 and he’s the patron saint of throat ailments (but could he cure lisping? We’re not sure). Legends regarding Saint Blaise’s miraculous ability to cure both the body and the spirit led to stories of wild animals arriving in herds to be healed by the pious saint. Blaise was martyred when the then-Emperor Licinius ordered all the Christians be killed. The name was popularized throughout medieval Europe (although it’s no longer in use today); it was famously borne by French mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). The masculine name Blaze, however, is pretty American through and through – and many people would argue that it’s actually gender neutral and perfectly fine for baby girls.

OF THE BOY NAME BLAZE

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME BLAZE

Blaze first appeared on the American boy’s naming charts starting in the 21st century, in the year 2000 (it has yet to officially emerge as a girl’s name). It hasn’t done a whole lot on the charts since its debut except park itself near the bottom of the Top 1000 list. Obviously Blaze is not a name for every parent – it’s a strong and bold choice for sure. Blaze reminds us of a couple other boy names like Ace, Lance or Slade. They are all one syllable names that suggest a certain degree of manliness and confidence. Blaze especially is “white hot” and burning with excitement. If you think Blaze is just too audacious as a given name, consider it as a nickname if your little toddler shows signs of a “lisp”. In any case, the name Blaze has only been around for a short while and has yet to “blaze” his own trail on the Top 1000 list. There’s only a small subset of American parents daring enough to use a name like Blaze and for that alone we have to applaud you; it’s a risky choice.
