Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Bode

Bode is the transferred use of an English surname with Nordic origins, from the Old Norse “bodi” meaning “messenger”. Spelling variations occurred in different forms mainly in the North and Western regions of England such as Body, Boddy, Boddie and Bode. Due to the Viking raids and Nordic settlements established in England long ago, there are several names that remain with Old Norse roots. As an independently given name, Bode is rarely used and appears distinct to the United States and Australia.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME BODE

What influenced the sudden usage of Bode among baby boys in the United States was World Cup and Olympic downhill skier Bode Miller (born Samuel Bode Miller). The name first appeared on the American male naming charts in 2006 which was actually Miller’s most controversial year in his sport (which kept the media attention on him – and his name). He had a disappointing show at the 2006 Olympics in Italy, complained a lot and boasted about his “Olympic level” partying. His lack of sportsmanship garnered him some negative press which kept him in the public eye. He made up for it at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, at least. Regardless, future parents were drawn to the laid-back quality of his name. It’s short and simple, strong and confident, unpretentious and free-spirited. Although the name only hit the charts briefly, and only for a couple years, it may be due for a comeback. It has a certain skier-surfer-skateboarder quality – that “cool” guy factor who marches to the beat of his own drummer.
