Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Braedon

Braedon is one of the several Americanized respellings of the Irish-Gaelic name Braden, from the Irish-Gaelic “bradán” meaning “salmon”. The transformation of humans into animal forms was very common in early Celtic mythology and poetry, and as a result, large classes of early Irish names are thus derived from animal names. It was thought that the bearer of such names would gain some of the power and qualities of the animal. In Celtic mythology the salmon was a particularly important creature and most associated with wisdom and knowledge. For instance, the legendary Fionn mac Cumhaill (leader of the Fianna) acquired his wisdom by touching the “salmon of knowledge” and then sucking his thumb. This gave him the ability to see into the future so that he was able to defend against enemies, protect his homeland and bring great prominence to the Fianna. Ironically, Braden and his several Americanized respellings are mainly used in the United States, Canada and Australia rather than in Ireland.

OF THE BOY NAME BRAEDON

Braedon is the least popular spelling modification of the ancient Irish Braden. In fact, Brayden is currently the most common spelling in the U.S. and a Top 50 favorite nationwide. Braedon has only been on the charts since 1999 and he recently fell off America’s Top 1000 list in 2010. The spelling of Braeden does quite a bit better, for whatever reason. Some of these spelling changes seem arbitrary. We understand how parents probably think they are “uniqueifying” their child with these types of altered spellings, but it usually just causes spelling confusion throughout one’s lifetime. C'est la vie! Or sin saol as the Irish would say.
